Photo Walk to Tsukiji Fish Market

An insanely early walk from Akihabara to Tsukiji Fish Market.

On the 19th of January, 2024, Mallory and I arrived in the afternoon. The following morning, we all experienced jet lag, waking up at 3 am, including Jennifer. In a spontaneous decision, we decided to walk from our Akihabara hotel to Tsukiji Fish Market, anticipating the early 6 am market opening to avoid the crowds.

Tokyo Station

First pitstop was about 20 minutes in, we stopped by Tokyo Station and Jennifer showed us where we could explore for the rest of the day.

A couple things that caught my eye: Tokyo Inn signage and the contrasting architecture placed next to each other.

Tsukiji Fish Market

We arrived at Tsukiji Fish Market at roughly 6:30am. Immediately we saw heaps of people lined up in front of a few vendors serving hot soba noodles and curry on rice.

We weren't hungry yet so we walked into the smaller alleyways instead, and came across a variety of shops. My favourite was this shop selling all sorts of cookwares.

Otoro

We came across a Otoro (大トロ) stand, Jennifer and I shared a pack. It was the best piece of fish I've ever had!

Otoro is the highest grade, obtained from the fattiest part of the tuna's belly, and is the most expensive due to its high fat content, buttery texture, and rich flavor.

Scallops

Next up we came across a grilled seafood stand. We shared a couple huge scallops as big as our faces.

Tamagoyaki

We then stopped by a Tamagoyaki (玉子燒) stand to give that a try. The texture was amazing but the sweetness was unexpected.
